Getting Back on Track

An Honest Chat About Wellness and Fitness Goals and Missing a Step or Two

Hey there! So, you’ve found yourself off the path of your wellness and fitness goals. First off, take a deep breath. It happens to all of us. Life is a rollercoaster, and sometimes we get thrown off course. The important thing is knowing how to get back on track without beating yourself up.

I find there are seven steps to maintaining our wellness and fitness goals:

Step 1: Reflect, Don’t Regret

It’s easy to fall into the trap of regret. “Why did I skip the gym for a whole week?” or “Why did I eat that entire pizza?” Trust me, we’ve all been there. Instead of dwelling on the past, reflect on what caused you to stray. Was it stress? Lack of time? Maybe it's just a craving? Understanding the reason helps you address it head-on.

Step 2: Start Small

When you’re ready to jump back in, start small. Don’t pressure yourself to hit the gym for an hour if you haven't worked out. Begin with a 10-minute walk. Love yoga? Do a short session at home. Small steps build momentum and make the transition back to your routine smoother.

Step 3: Set Realistic Goals

It’s tempting to set grand goals like, “I’ll work out every day for an hour!” But let’s be realistic. Life is busy, and setting achievable goals prevents burnout. Maybe aim for three workouts a week to start. You can always increase it as you get back into the groove.

Step 4: Mix It Up

Sometimes, we fall off track because our routines get boring. Spice things up! Try a new workout class, go hiking, or join a recreational sports league. Variety keeps things exciting and can rekindle your passion for fitness.

Step 5: Accountability is Key

Find a buddy or join a group with similar goals. Accountability partners can provide that extra push you need when motivation is lacking. Even a simple text from a friend asking if you’ve worked out today can make a big difference.

Step 6: Celebrate Small Wins

Every step forward is a win. Celebrate the small victories, whether sticking to your weekly workout plan, making a healthy meal, or even just feeling better mentally. These celebrations fuel your motivation and remind you of your progress.

Step 7: Be Kind to Yourself

Lastly, be kind to yourself. Getting back on track isn’t about punishing yourself for past slips. It’s about recognizing your humanness and moving forward with self-compassion. Wellness and fitness are lifelong journeys with ups and downs. Embrace the process.

Final Thoughts

Remember, it's totally normal to veer off course sometimes. What matters is how you steer yourself back. Reflect, set small goals, keep things fun, lean on your support system, and celebrate your wins. You’ve got this!

Now, let’s lace up those sneakers and take that first step back on track. Your wellness journey awaits!

Be happy, healthy and safe!
